Filmmakers from all over the Richmond, VA area compete to see who can make the best short film in only 48 hours.

Write, shoot, and edit a short film over the weekend and see it PREMIERE on the BIG SCREEN!

All Welcome!  First-timer to Hobbyists to Amateurs to Professionals!

Take your filmmaking to the NEXT LEVEL!

Wherever you are currently in your filmmaking journey, the 48 Hour Film Project is a valuable next step!  

     •. Make your FIRST film... the first of many!

     •. Create a film (or another film!) for your reel

     •  Practice new techniques -- in a low-risk setting

     •. Find new filmmaking partners to work with, beginning on a (very!) short-term basis

     •  Create work to help show off your skills to find that next job!

The winning film will go up against films from around the world at Filmapalooza 2025 for a chance at the grand prize and an opportunity to screen at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 Short Film Corner!

Filmmakers from the Richmond area raced to make a HORROR film in just 48 hours, and you can see the best of them in the Best of Richmond HORROR Awards!

The 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP) is the world's largest timed film competition, and it has returned to Richmond as a part of the 2023 international tour. One film will be chosen by a panel of film professionals as the "Best 48HFP HORROR Film of Richmond" and that film will move on to screen at Filmapalooza in Lisbon, Portugal in March 2024. A runner-up and awards in numerous other categories will also be awarded immediately after the screenings.

The 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP) is the world's largest timed film competition, and it has returned to Richmond as a part of the 2023 international tour. I Mustache You [Comedy 13:35] - Shara Ashley Zeiger, Queens NY. Abby, a woman with social anxiety, OCD and agoraphobic tendencies, receives an invitation to love, self acceptance and the outside world. 

Gary & Celeste [Drama 20:54] - Will Dunlap, Richmond VA. On a lonely winter morning, two strangers seek connection and redemption after an unexpected rendezvous. 

Farmer Ed [Horror 16:40] - Azwan Badruzaman, Los Angeles CA. An isolated farmer makes a shocking discovery on his land and unlocks its mysteries unbeknownst to his wife.

Fleeced [Thriller 22:37] - Samuel Van Fossen, Lynchburg VA. A former child star, haunted by his past, becomes a serial killer.

Florence in Customer Care [Horror 13:57] - Jordan Sommerlad & Cory Stonebrook, Long Island City NY. A customer care representative at a furniture website begins to unravel as a mysterious rash appears on her body.

She’s Mine Now [Drama 6:05] - Dalton Okolo, Falls Church VA. An assassin takes a memento from the couple she has recently murdered. 

Will Dunlap, Samuel Van Fossen and Dalton Okolo scheduled to appear for filmmaker Q&A moderated by Ryan Cudahy following the screenings.

This event showcases innovative short, independent film submissions from diverse, new and emerging cinematic creators—the fresh voices experimenting and creating brilliant work without commercial pressure or restraint. It is a boutique experience in the middle of the week where creatives, cinephiles, and general audiences alike can routinely look forward to discovering new works and original storytellers in cinema.

Official selections for this event are:

"How to Hack Birth Control," Sassy Mohen - Los Angeles. A satire comedy series told through the sharp wit and perky charm of the narrator Ruth, who takes on everything that sex ed never told you.

"Blue," Robert Petrie - New York. Jules looks to the stars for answers—and encounters intergalactic villains along the way!

"Gateway," Christopher Cunetto - Washington, D.C. After an unusual incident, a desperate widower becomes obsessed with contacting his late wife using a fringe-science meditation technique.

"Treasure," Anthony Parson - Richmond. Destiny embarks upon a journey to find treasure.

"Chimera," Andrew Lee Ryan - Los Angeles. Set in a not-too-distant future small town, a VR life simulation junkie goes on a mission in reality to get a new dopamine game cartridge before she goes through happiness withdrawal.

"At Last," Lancelot Mingau - France. The weight of a choice rests on one man’s shoulders.

Anthony Parson and Christopher Cunetto are scheduled to appear for a filmmaker Q&A moderated by Maggie Lovitt (Hollywood Critics Association) following the screening.

Official selections for this event are:

After You,” by Noah Pescara - Richmond. A heartbroken 25-year-old takes his therapist’s advice to meet new people, but what he finds is not what he expected.

The Discipline,” by Prahas - India. A teacher disciplines her pupils when a few unwanted incidents occur in a residential school for children.

Welfare Check,” by Devon John Doyle - Richmond. An officer investigates a disturbance only to learn he may be unprepared.

It’s Sunny Outside,” by Michael Robert Kessler - Florida. Thomas is a stay-at-home dad and workaholic who can’t seem to get the quiet he needs to get any work done.

On the Inside,” by Pal Gustavsen - Norway. A young man leaves his house to go for a walk when out of nowhere, people chase him with fierce determination.

Compassionate Caren in the Big, Bad World,” directed by Dean Shortland. Created by Faith Murphy - Tennessee. Caren is a middle-aged control freak who isn’t feeling accepted in the world around her anymore.

Screening will be followed by a Q&A, moderated by Tre Tennyson, with the filmmakers from Richmond and New Jersey!
