the WRITERS’ room
“So many times I thought my script was bulletproof just to find out it had some holes and plot points, dialogue, or other areas that needed tweaking. I’ve been part of three writing groups, and RFN Screenwriters’ Lab has been the most beneficial.”
screenwriters’ lab
The Richmond Film Network Screenwriters’ Lab provides an informed and supportive space for screenwriters to receive constructive feedback on their scripts from multiple perspectives, which can be considered for later independent refinement. Participation fosters creativity, improves the quality of scripts, and builds community among screenwriters in the Richmond area. Writers, peer critics and observers are welcome. We believe that participating in any of the three roles provides an opportunity to learn valuable skills.
Writers submit their scripts to obtain critical feedback from peers with fresh eyes and unique perspectives. Anyone may submit scripts for workshopping consideration, but scripts must demonstrate at least an intermediate understanding of script format to ensure the Lab Is primarily focused on story structure and development, and not on formatting rules.
Peer Critics read scripts and provide feedback to writers by noting what works, identifying problems, and suggesting potential solutions for the writer to consider. Peers should have some writing experience and are highly encouraged to register for Labs early so that they may receive scripts in advance and have time prior to the Lab to read and prepare.
Observers audit the Lab to gain knowledge, insight, and confidence with their own writing and abilities as a future peer or writer.
The RFN Screenwriters’ Lab is a safe space for creatives to support, learn, grow, and inspire. By participating in the lab, attendees become part of a growing creative community, working together to elevate the local film and storytelling scene.
Two scripts, shorts or features, are selected per workshop. Each workshop has a moderator who maintains structure and leads the discussion.
Workshopped writers must attend Lab for which their script is scheduled and are responsible for taking their own notes, though written notes from peers are appreciated.
Check our EVENTS tab for the next scheduled Screenwriters’ Lab.
